Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
