Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any prominent prize-giving event approaches, you'll find an outcry to include additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types actually cover many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
